Britain is not really famous for their video games. That’s an incorrect sentence. The UK has a lot of great developers which have made some of the best franchises and other notable games which you have probably played or heard of during the years.
Without further ado, here are some of the UK’s best video games.
Grand Theft Auto Series
Grand Theft Auto is a very well-known franchise which has stirred up a lot of attention, such as whether video games make people, children mostly, become violent. This is a game franchise where people spend most of their time boosting cars and shooting at everything that moves with a rocket launcher or otherwise destructive weapon. Its developer, Rockstar North, was already responsible for cult games such as Lemmings.
Total War Series
This franchise comes from Creative Assembly, a UK developer. It is a series of strategy games dealing with different time periods. From Roman times to medieval times, their games span a large historical timeline. The newest entry in the Total War franchise is Warhammer and Warhammer II, which take part in a fictional universe with fictional creatures.
Creative Assembly also developed the first FIFA game, called FIFA International Soccer.
Prepare your hover ship and get ready to race. Racing at high speeds is just the start of what this game can give you. You are also equipped with weapons, aimed to either destroy or stall your competitors. This game was developed by Psygnosis, who also published many great games like Discworld and Lemmings.
Tomb Raider Series
It is difficult to tell which Tomb Raider game is the best. Many people recall the first two games and Lara Croft, the protagonist, jumping around and doing handstands on lethal places. She is the female protagonist equivalent to the Assassin’s Creed characters, both in terms of parkour and lethality.
There are many Tomb Raider games today, with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the newest title, they amount up to 17 games. While there were many developers responsible for different Tomb Raider games in the franchise, Core Design from the UK developed the first game.
This game dates back to 1989 and falls under the god game genre. The goal of the game is to defeat the enemy followers off the map and increase your own followers. You guide your followers to build and you can use powers to raise or lower the land and cause earthquakes or create other types of terrain such as swamp, lava, rock or snow. The game was developed by Bullfrog Productions.
Colin McRae Rally Series
The Colin McRae Rally series started off with a bang, being a bestseller in the UK. Since then, it had many iterations, the newest one being Dirt 4. These are some of the best rally games you can play and well-optimized, especially Dirt 3 and 4. The games are developed by Codemasters, who are already known for their racing games, like Mirco Machines back in 1991.
As you can see, there are plenty of great games from the UK developers. There surely are more, as each and every one of these developers has made more than one game, not to mention the other developers, not on this list. The United Kingdom has brought us amazing video games and will continue to do so, judging from the upcoming titles.
